If you are seeking an unusual city break at the top of the world – right on the edge of the Arctic – then this video is for you. This vlog shows my trip in early January 2020 to the Norwegian city of Tromsø – one of the largest cities in the Arctic Circle.
Perhaps one of the highlights of any Arctic trip is the possibility to see the aurora borealis or Northern Lights which is on many people’s bucket lists. Tromsø is the right place to see this natural phenomenon, although you also need a bit of luck (unfortunately I didn’t see them). During January there is not much daylight, but the city has a unique Winter Wonderland feeling. Indeed, Tromsø city centre contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest dating from 1789. Tromsø is also the cultural hub of the region. While there you can also get up close to some of the Arctic’s most famous residents; I decided to do an excursion to a reindeer farm and enjoy a Husky experience.
