A long-pending deal for a joint India-Lanka development of the Trincomalee oil tank farm has been finalised. The deal, which is set to be signed in January 2022, is being seen as a boost to India & a setback to China. The deal marks the culmination of the proposal that was envisaged 35 years ago, in the Indo-Lanka Accord 1987. These oil farms are strategically important as they are located along some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. This comes as Sri Lanka faces a deep economic crisis & has sought assistance from India to overcome the situation.
